BERIL 6 GY 96; RYRE 22, YEAR 788 OF THE TOURINZ DYNASTY
Phanette looked back at Nessapen as he walked into the office. “What can I do for you, sir?” she turned and asked.
“Just checking in to see if you were able to find volunteers for the Daineen leg,” he replied as he sat down in a spare chair off to the side of the desk. “To be honest, I can’t even imagine how you are going to find enough. That is a lot of ground to cover.”
“I am finishing up the game plan now,” she said as she looked back down at the electronic notepad.
“How many were you able to round up?” Nessapen asked with a grin.
“A little over five hundred,” Phanette replied calmly. “Sixty-two are available anywhere at any time during the day for up to a month if necessary.”
Nessapen stared at her in shock. “How?”
“Doctor Gaine has been asking his church to pray for her safe arrival on Dainee. He swore he gave no details and I was able to confirm he hasn’t. The whole church has promised to watch over her during her trip but not to speak to her for however many days it takes to get to the Board.”
“Five hundred people. That is a lot of volunteers. I am assuming you have them spread out over the trip?”
“First day, there is going to be a picnic outing with most of our volunteers. Since we aren’t sure when the ship is going to arrive, we may have to scrap that one. For the rest of the trip, we will have observers and those in motion, so we won’t be too far away for long. Now most of our volunteers on the first day are very young and the oldest among them, so we will use them either in mass at an event or in safe areas. The able-bodied I will have positioned in areas where her safety may be in jeopardy.”
Nessapen nodded. “I did tell you I want you to run the floor, right? During the leg?”
Phanette nodded. “Yes, sir.” She frowned. “I don’t understand why. They will accept your instruction as easily as mine. They don’t know me … just Doctor Gaine.”
“I need you to run it because of the nature of the criminals that she may run into there. I think you would be able to tell faster when the situation has become dangerous.”
“I will do my best, sir,” she replied with a grin.
